This essay, by some guy named Paul Graham, is possibly the best explanation of my vocation I've ever read. Yes, truly: I am a musician, an artist, a bit of a writer, and a computer programmer. They all come from the same place in my head. There's no "left brain = computers, right brain = music" division here; it really is all the same thing. "Software engineer" has always felt like a pretentious exaggeration, and this piece finally explains why. I could repeat half of what he says in order to agree with it, but you should just go read the piece instead.
